How to

Compress a video in three steps

Add your video

Drop the file onto the tool above or choose it from your device.

Choose how small

Slide toward "smaller file" for more compression, and optionally cap the resolution at 720p or 480p.

Compress and download

The file shrinks on your device, then you download the smaller MP4.

Tip: the single biggest saving is trimming. Cut the parts you do not need before compressing, and lower the resolution if the video will only be watched on a phone.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much smaller will my video get?

It depends on the source, but a typical phone or screen recording drops by 40 to 70 percent with little visible change. Moving the quality slider toward "smaller file" and capping the resolution both reduce size further.

Does compressing reduce quality?

Some, but far less than you might expect. The encoder discards detail you are least likely to notice first. At a balanced setting most people cannot tell the compressed file from the original at normal viewing size.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Compression happens inside your browser on your own device. The file is never uploaded to a server.

What files can I compress?

Common video files including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and M4V. The output is an MP4, which plays almost everywhere.
